Construction was straightforward, although I didn't even attempt to mount the landing gear on the bottom of the stock fuselage, which was made of balsa that was much too thin - a rough landing would break it too easily. I replaced this small section of the fuse with some 1/4-inch plywood, which also gave a better plate to screw on the compartment covers.
Adding a motor was surprisingly easy- the kit included several thin, but strong plywood panels which gave good options for creating a sturdy mount, and the 2 & 2.5 degree thrust angles were already accounted for by the structure where these panels fit. This model is designed without a cowl, so no special measuring or custom fitting was needed.
Initial few flights proved the plane to be very stable in the air; it takes off smoothly and can be landed at low speeds which was very welcome. If I had to compare this to other, more popular planes, I would call it a big ParkZone Typhoon, which I also own. It has similar body shape, and even larger control surfaces for the 3D maneuvers.
Only drawbacks were having to reinforce the fuse for the landing gear, and the fact that the wings don't have much balsa support at the front edges, so a strong gust from the propeller causes the covering to buzz with vibration. This design was probably to keep the weight way down, which was successful- it is very light for it's size, much lighter than the E-Flite Diamante, which has a shorter wingspan by 2 inches. |
