Gundam plastic model kits (Gunpla), have over four decades of legacy. Many things have changed over the years. A prominent one is replacing the traditional method of gluing the parts by snapping them onto each other to make them into models. What has remained the same is the fandom and the love that Gunpla receives to this day. The Gundam kit’s grading ranges from basic, easy-to-build kits recommended for beginners to intricate models with complex detailing for experienced builders. The number of parts, articulation, colour separation and overall design complexity are the factors that influence the grading of the Gundam plastic model kit—the higher the grade, the more advanced the features, ensuring a suitable grade for everyone. Today, we will discuss the different types of Gundam grades and which are ideal for beginners.

High

This grade has the most commonly purchased kits. They are affordable ($12-25) and easy to build. Their scale is 1/144, which makes them the perfect size for collecting and displaying. High-grade (HG) kits provide a premium experience, making them an excellent choice for beginners.

Real

Real kits, or RG, are comparatively new to the Gunpla community. They are between the skeletal inner frame of Master Grades and the size of an HG (1/144). These kits are more detailed, giving us a more realistic approach.

Master

Master Grade or MG are 1/100 scale kits for $30-$50. These kits utilize the inner skeleton, which helps with their articulation and sturdiness. Due to its size, detail, and pose-ability, it is a classic favourite among the Gunpla builders.

Perfect

Besides the mega size (MG) grades, these kits are among the biggest available. They are a 1/60 scale that stands out amongst the Gundam collection. They are the most expensive kits priced above $120. You get a beautifully designed box with a fantastic model kit. They come with many parts, giving them an extremely detailed look. They also can integrate an LED lighting system inside the kit.

SD

Super Deformed or SD grades are by far the smallest in the list. Their deformed body proportions, like the big heads, can be easily recognized. They are beginner-friendly and recommended for children. Their pricing is very affordable, ranging from $4-10. These kits are great for a quick build.

Which Grade is Ideal for Beginners?

The High and Super-Deformed grades are the most suitable for beginners based on the aspects of a kit, detailing, price, and charm.
