The P-40 gained everlasting recognition as the "Flying Tiger" during World War 2, primarily due to its operation by General Claire Chennault's Volunteer Group, which engaged in combat against the Japanese in China and Burma. Additionally, it was extensively utilized in the Middle East, where it was adopted by Britain's Royal Air Force and referred to as the Tomahawk and Kittyhawk. At the onset of World War 2, the P-40 was the sole fighter aircraft available in significant numbers to the United States Army Air Forces, marking it as the first American single-seat aircraft to be produced in mass quantities within the U.S. By the conclusion of the war, more than 14,000 units had been supplied to various combat zones.
