The initial production model F6F-3 took flight in October 1942, and by January 16, 1943, operational F6F-3s were being supplied to the U.S. Navy. Over 2500 units entered naval service in 1944, with the production of the "3s" ceasing in the spring of 1944 as an upgraded version, the F6F-5, began to come off the assembly lines. From its first combat encounter, the Hellcat demonstrated superiority over its Japanese adversary and maintained this edge until the conclusion of hostilities. Primarily recognized for its achievements during the Pacific War, Hellcats were deployed on various carriers of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, including Yorktown, Essex, Enterprise, Hornet, Lexington, Ticonderoga, and Intrepid. Significant combat operations took place over Marcus Island, Wake Island, Tarawa, and the Marianas. For Ages 14 and up.
