Despite being somewhat eclipsed by the renowned Mustang, the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt carved out a notable reputation as a high-altitude interceptor and bomber escort. During World War II, more Thunderbolts were produced than any other American fighter, and the seven-ton aircraft gained immense popularity among A.A.F. pilots due to its remarkable capacity to withstand significant battle damage and continue flying. Perhaps the most remarkable acknowledgment of this aircraft is that all 10 of the top Thunderbolt aces survived the conflict.
